House call with Dr Joe

From many of the Dr Joe enquiries we have received, it is clear that some of our members often struggle to communicate their healthcare needs to their doctors, which is of great concern to us. The relationship with your doctor is a very personal one that should be built on a solid grounding of open communication and trust. You must be able to trust, confide in and tell your doctor about your health problems, including all your symptoms. Your doctor, in turn, should listen to you, give you different options and explain things clearly to you in a way that is easy to understand. If you do not understand anything your doctor has told you, don't be afraid, shy, or embarrassed to ask him/her questions. Remember your doctor always has your best interests in mind.

We encourage you to work closely with your doctor to achieve the best possible outcomes for your health. This month the Best of Dr Joe features:

We want to continue encouraging you to send Dr Joe your questions in writing to drjoe@gems.gov.za. We ask that you send only one question per month and we will try our level best to answer your health queries within 24 hours. At the end of each month we will once again choose the four most pertinent queries to expand upon. By doing this, we aim to continue providing you with comprehensive information about a wide range of health conditions that are most relevant to you.
