Medical scheme contribution tax credit

As of 1 March 2012 the medical scheme tax rebate system was converted into a credit system. This is according to the Taxation Law Amendment Bill, published on 25 October 2011 and promulgated on 10 January 2012. This is an effort to achieve greater equality in the treatment of medical expenses across income groups.

Previous medical scheme rebate system New tax credit system

Taxpayers who made contributions to medical schemes recived
set rebates that reduced their monthly taxable income
dpending on the number of dependants registered on the scheme,
as follows:

  • R720 for the principal member
  • R1440 for the principal member and one dependant
  • R1440 for the prinicpal member and one dependant, plus R440
    for each additional dependant.

Credits are effective as follows per month for
taxpayers under the age of 65:

  • R230 for the principal member (taxpayer)
  • R460 for the principal member and one
    dependant
  • R460 for the principal member and one
dependant, plus R154 for each additional dependant.

Members who earn less than R300 000 per annum are likely to enjoy a reduction in their tax payments.

The Scheme has also assessed the impact of the tax change in the various subsidies members enjoy and these have been
communicated to the employer.
